Should Obesity be Considered a Disease

August 8, 2020

Do you find yourself trapped in an obesity cycle?

Does obesity affect your mind and health?

Is obesity the main reason behind comorbidities that have suddenly knocked on your door?

If the answer to the above questions is YES, then obesity can be considered not only as a disease but also an epidemic. An epidemic that has taken a toll over the life of Indians and doesn’t seem to fade away.

Labeling obesity as a disease would also mean it can be covered under Insurance. Since it’s not just a cosmetic problem, obesity gives birth to deadly diseases like type-2 diabetes, cancer, heart problems, sleep apnea, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases.

However, some people consider Obesity as a cosmetic problem rather than calling it a disease. The reason behind this thought is if it is called a disease then treatment would be the only option left with patients. They will have to go for surgery and no other solution would be relevant to the problem.

According to Merriam Webster, a disease is “any condition that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms.”

Is obesity a disease or a disorder?
Obesity is strictly a chronic disease. It is closely related to several other illnesses like heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, certain cancers, joint diseases, and more.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic disease can be defined as any condition that lasts one year or more and needs ongoing medical attention and limits activities of daily living.

Should obesity be considered as a disease is a heated topic of debate that is going on for years. There are no particular conclusions to it, but there is a solution definitely- Bariatric Surgery. It’s a permanent way to get rid of obesity and lead towards a healthier way of living.
