Things to avoid after Gastric Bypass Surgery

November 21, 2022

Gastric bypass, a bariatric procedure that is most commonly adopted for most of the obesity surgery. With more than 2 lakh procedures carried out each year, bariatric surgery is gaining popularity in the country. Gastric bypass is one of the most popular types of weight-loss surgeries.

The size of your stomach is reduced with a gastric bypass, and the surgeon alters how food enters your intestines. By making you feel full with less food and by stopping your body from absorbing all of the calories from the food you consume, these adjustments help you lose weight in two different ways.

A gastric bypass diet can help you achieve your weight loss objectives while ensuring that your body continues receiving the nutrition it requires. This diet is made to assist people who are healing from weight loss surgery and changing their eating habits permanently so they can drop the extra weight and keep it off.

Avoid Certain Foods after Gastric Bypass

Some patients believe they can eat whatever they want after having bariatric surgery. That is regrettably not the case. After having weight-loss surgery, the majority of people can stomach most foods. However, this is only sometimes recommended.

Usually, this is due to the food’s difficulty in digestion. After a gastric bypass, even healthy meals like some fruits and vegetables may not be well accepted, so it’s crucial to talk to your doctor about the specifics of your post-op diet.

Following gastric bypass, there are specific food groups you should include in your diet and stay away from some. One should avoid the following 10 foods post-gastric bypass:

– Nutrient-empty foods (i.e. sweets, chips, popcorn, pretzels)
– Dry food (i.e. nuts, granola, dry cereals)
– Liquor
– Pasta, bread and rice
– Fruits and vegetables with fibres (i.e. celery, cabbage, broccoli, corn)
– Sugary or highly caffeinated drinks (i.e. soda and certain fruit juices)
– Sugary meals (i.e. bacon, sausage, whole milk, butter)
– Hard meats (i.e. steak, pork chops, ham, hotdogs)
– Spiced or seasoned foods
– Microwave-reheated food

Even though your post-op diet following gastric bypass surgery may seem unduly limited, you can still eat many foods. Following surgery, weight loss specialists advise keeping a food journal to monitor your dietary intake, tolerances, and intolerances as you become used to your new gastric bypass diet.
